Therapist Amsterdam – Couples Therapy & Individual Coaching

Coach & Relationship therapist Amsterdam - Coen Hamming

Are you struggling with relationship difficulties, feeling stuck in your personal life, or finding it hard to move forward? Perhaps you're dealing with recurring conflicts, difficult emotions, stress or uncertainty about what you really want.

I'm Coen Hamming, a couples therapist and personal coach in Amsterdam. Since 2011, I've been helping individuals and couples understand themselves and each other better, overcome obstacles and find new ways forward.

I offer EFT couples therapy, individual coaching and personal guidance. My background also includes EMDR trauma therapy, body-oriented Pesso therapy and Co-Active Coaching.

I believe that people are capable of finding their own answers, even when fears, difficult experiences or recurring patterns make those answers hard to see. Through careful listening, thoughtful questions and practical exercises, I help you gain insight into yourself and discover what you need to make meaningful changes.

Languages: English and Dutch.

Finding your own way forward

Life can be wonderful, but it also presents us with difficult decisions, unexpected challenges and experiences that leave us feeling lost or uncertain.

Sometimes you know exactly what is troubling you. At other times, you may simply feel that something isn't right, without being able to explain why.

Perhaps you keep finding yourself in similar situations, struggle to make decisions, or feel that your relationships or professional life aren't developing in the direction you would like.

As a therapist and coach, I help you take a closer look at what is happening, understand the patterns you may be caught in and discover new possibilities.

You are capable, not broken

One of the most important principles in my work is that I see my clients as capable people who are not broken and don't need to be fixed.

I believe that ultimately, you are the person who knows what is best for you.

But that doesn't mean it's always easy to recognise what you need.

Your thoughts may be clouded by fears, conflicting emotions, expectations or an endless list of advantages and disadvantages. You might know what you would like to change, yet find yourself unable to take the next step.

Sometimes you become so caught up in trying to solve a problem that you lose sight of the bigger picture.

I don't see my role as telling you what to do or providing ready-made solutions. Instead, I help you look at your situation from different perspectives, reconnect with your own abilities and discover which choices are right for you.

For me, personal growth isn't just about changing things you don't like. It's also about learning to understand and appreciate who you already are.

Understanding yourself and your relationships

Whether you come to me individually or together with your partner, understanding what's happening beneath the surface is an important part of our work.

In couples therapy, I often see how two people can become caught in a pattern where both feel misunderstood or unheard. Each partner becomes increasingly focused on explaining or defending their own position, while the emotional connection between them gradually weakens.

In individual coaching, something similar can happen within yourself. Different needs, fears and expectations may pull you in opposite directions, making it difficult to recognise what you actually want.

In both situations, I help you look beyond the immediate problem.

What are you feeling? What is important to you? Which fears or experiences influence your reactions? And what could happen if you approached the situation differently?

Greater understanding can create room for different choices, whether that means changing how you relate to your partner, how you respond to difficult situations or how you shape your own life.

My approach to therapy and coaching

I have a broad background in coaching and therapeutic approaches, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR, body-oriented Pesso therapy and Co-Active Coaching.

These different perspectives allow me to adapt my approach to your situation and the questions you bring.

During our sessions, I listen carefully, ask questions and help you examine your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. We may use coaching exercises or practical assignments to explore new perspectives and bring what we discuss into your everyday life.

In individual coaching, I focus mainly on the present and the future, while also recognising that experiences from the past can continue to influence how you feel and act today.

My aim is not simply to help you overcome one particular obstacle, but to support a broader change in how you understand yourself and approach the challenges in your life.

I believe this is where meaningful personal development can begin.
