Are you feeling stuck in your personal or professional life? Perhaps you're struggling with difficult decisions, questioning what you really want, or finding it hard to move forward. You may feel overwhelmed by thoughts, fears or expectations that prevent you from making the changes you would like to make.
I'm Coen Hamming, a personal coach and therapist in Amsterdam. I offer individual coaching in English and Dutch, helping you gain insight into yourself, understand your thoughts and emotions, and find your own way forward.
My approach combines Co-Active Coaching with insights and techniques from different therapeutic methods, depending on what you need.
Finding your own answers
I believe that people are fundamentally capable of living a fulfilling life. You already have many of the qualities and abilities you need to deal with life's challenges.
But sometimes you can lose sight of them.
Difficult experiences, fears, expectations and conflicting thoughts can make it hard to know what you really want. You may find yourself going around in circles, weighing up the same possibilities without reaching a decision.
As your coach, I don't tell you what to do or offer ready-made solutions. Instead, I help you organise your thoughts, understand your feelings and reconnect with your own abilities.
By asking questions, listening carefully and looking at your situation from different perspectives, we explore what is holding you back and what you would like to change.
What can individual coaching help with?
In my practice in Amsterdam, I work with people who are struggling with different challenges in their personal lives, work or relationships.
You can come to me for support with:
- Feeling stuck or unsure about the direction of your life
- Difficult decisions and important life choices
- Stress, burnout and finding a better work-life balance
- Low self-confidence, insecurity and self-doubt
- Understanding and changing recurring patterns
- Dealing with difficult emotions, fears and worries
- Relationship difficulties and communication problems
- Personal development and questions about meaning and purpose
- Processing experiences from the past
- Understanding your needs, values and boundaries
You don't always need to have a clearly defined problem. Sometimes you simply feel that something isn't right or that you want your life to be different, without knowing exactly how.
Understanding the influence of your past
Something I often encounter in my work is that people want to move forward but continue to respond to situations based on experiences from their past.
Old expectations, disappointments or painful experiences can still influence how you think, feel and behave today.
You may understand rationally that something belongs to the past, while emotionally it continues to affect you.
Sometimes this involves a process of grieving: acknowledging what happened, what you lost or what you never received, so that you can gradually loosen its hold on your present life.
My background in body-oriented Pesso therapy and EMDR also gives me different ways of approaching these difficulties when appropriate.
Personal coaching – My approach
In my coaching sessions, I focus mainly on the present and the future. The aim is to help you feel more satisfied with your personal life, your professional life and your relationships.
We start by exploring your situation and clarifying what you would like to achieve.
During our conversations, I help you look at your thoughts, feelings and behaviour from different perspectives. We investigate the patterns you may be caught in and what could help you make different choices.
I use coaching techniques and practical exercises, and sometimes give you assignments to work on between sessions.
This helps you bring what we discuss into your everyday life, rather than leaving your insights behind when you walk out of the room.
I don't believe that change means becoming a completely different person. It is also about understanding and accepting who you already are.
From who you are now to who you want to be
One of the ideas behind my work is that meaningful change begins when you reconnect with yourself.
When you become clearer about your needs, values and desires, it becomes easier to recognise which choices are truly yours and which are driven by fear, habit or other people's expectations.
Rather than trying to fix every individual problem, I help you work towards a broader change in how you see yourself and approach your life.
As you develop a different perspective, some of the obstacles that once seemed impossible to overcome may begin to lose their power.
And even after completing a coaching process, you can return for an occasional session to review your progress or sharpen your goals.

It is very nice to have very personal coaching conversations, without it being heavy or tiring. The coaching conversations gave me a lot of energy and desire to get started.
